sellerkit measured data

How many downloads does a typical Obsidian plugin get?

Measured 2026-09-08. 7,403 listed plugins, 7,361 with published download statistics.

550. Half of the 7,361 Obsidian community plugins with published statistics have fewer than 550 lifetime downloads, and a quarter have fewer than 161. Only 26 plugins, 0.4 percent, have passed a million. The catalogue is unusually well maintained: only 11.7 percent have gone two years without a release. Measured September 2026.

Obsidian publishes its whole plugin registry and per plugin download counts as two files in a public repository, which makes this the rare catalogue that can be counted exactly rather than sampled.

Four plugins in ten have passed a thousand downloads, which is a far higher share than the comparable figure on larger marketplaces. A smaller catalogue with a more focused audience spreads attention less thinly.

Maintenance

Time since last releasePluginsShare
Over 1 year1,46319.9%
Over 2 years86311.7%
Over 3 years4175.7%

The median plugin last shipped a release 70 days ago. Set against the 54.8 percent of the WordPress.org directory that has been silent for over a year, this is a comparatively well tended catalogue.

Who writes them

5,418 distinct authors for 7,403 plugins, so most authors have written exactly one. 122 authors have five or more, and the largest single portfolio is 26 plugins.

How this was measured

On 2026-09-08 we read the two files Obsidian publishes in its obsidian-releases repository: community-plugins.json, the registry of every approved community plugin, and community-plugin-stats.json, which carries a lifetime download total and a last release timestamp for each. Both are the project's own files, so this is a full count of the catalogue rather than a sample.
